Objective

Develop a user-centric experience aimed at simplifying the interpretation of complex brain data while engaging users from the moment they interact with the product. Our objective was to design an immersive onboarding process that not only educates users about the capabilities of the MN8 earbuds but also provides immediate visual feedback on their mental states, fostering a sense of reward and motivation.

One key goal of this project was to identify an experience metaphor for the optimal performance state, potentially establishing it as the '10,000 steps' equivalent for Brainwear technology.

The core objective was to create an experience that users could walk away from with a positive impression even if the technology is not something they are ready to engage with at this early adaptor stage.

Problem
Statement

With the MN8 introducing novel performance metrics like Stress, Attention, and Cognitive Load, there was a need to translate complex brain data into easily understandable visuals. Additionally, the feedback provided by EEG technology improves with more data, requiring strategies to engage users effectively from the outset.

The challenge lay in visualising intricate brain data metrics like Cognitive Efficiency in a simple, understandable manner for users, ensuring they grasp their mental states intuitively.

With limited initial data, there was a need to captivate users from the onset to prevent disengagement, especially during the early stages of their interaction with the application.

We recorded analysed and investigated all of the steps from initial purchase, unboxing, set up to every day use and end of use to better understand where engagement stickiness strategies could be applied.

We partnered we large scale enterprises and integrated our solution into their workplace wellness program to get early user feedback and enroll participants in user testing from day one.

We ran frequent ideation and design workshops to come up with innovative and visually impressive ways to represent cognitive efficiency states to create our own representation of 10,000 steps for brain performance.

Solution development

To address the challenges, we focused on developing a visually impactful solution that leveraged transformative shapes and overlays to represent brain states intuitively. Our analysis of user research and performance metrics led to the creation of a distinctive particle sphere visualization, indicating Cognitive Efficiency levels through diffusion patterns and color cues. This approach allowed for immediate engagement and comprehension, even with limited initial data.

The solution also involved designing an immersive onboarding experience that guided users through device setup while educating them on the significance of different brain states. By incorporating interactive elements and real-time feedback during the onboarding process, we aimed to enhance user understanding and motivation.

Outcome

The Emotiv Contour successfully addressed the challenges posed by translating complex brain data into user-friendly visuals and engaging early users effectively. The implementation of transformative shapes and overlays, coupled with an immersive onboarding experience, resulted in immediate user engagement and comprehension. Early feedback indicated high user satisfaction and increased motivation to interact with the application, laying a strong foundation for continued user engagement and adoption of the MN8 EEG technology.
